Peer Led Team Learning

(PLTL)

PLTL is an optional program incorporated into several courses within the department of Biological Sciences at Florida International University. Each week you will be meeting with a PLTL leader and a small group of students. A PLTL Leader is a peer who has taken the course before and will guide you through the worksheets each week. You are responsible for bringing your textbook/notes from class to the session or else you will NOT receive full credit for being there.

Rooms
by Alberto Cruz - Friday, 20 January 2012, 08:05 PM

Students and Leaders,

All rooms have been uploaded. Please make sure to log in to your class page to figure out your room. A couple of notes:

FIUS = The FOOTBALL STADIUM; There is a post below this one titled "FIUS" that explains how to get there. Make sure that you enter through GATE 4, and you go to your left and up the elevators by the glass doors. Once up, exit the elevators to your right, and all of the rooms will be on the left hand side.

LC = The Labor Center; this is a small grey building in between SIPA and RDB, by the the gym.

CBC = College of Business Complex; this is a building with lots of red accents located next to the RB, which is near SIPA.

PCA = Paul Cejas Architechture Building; this is the building by the ECS building.

RB = Ryder Business building; this is near the SIPA building.

GPA = Golden Panther Arena; This is across the street from the gym.

When in doubt, the campus map helps: http://campusmaps.fiu.edu/mmc-map.pdf.

FIUS
by Alberto Cruz - Tuesday, 17 January 2012, 08:14 PM

Students and Leaders,

Before you ask what room FIUS is, please know that it is the Football Stadium. You may follow the link below for a campus map:

http://campusmaps.fiu.edu/mmc-map.pdf.

I am also attaching a word file with that same map with a giant yellow circle around the stadium. The rooms are the clubrooms (box seats) in gate 4 of the stadium.

*How to get there: Once you arrive at the stadium, it will be on the South side of the stadium (facing Tamiami Park). Enter through Gate 4, and to the left will be an elevator that will take you to the second floor club rooms. Once you exit the elevators, all of the rooms will be to the right. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us at pltl@fiu.edu.

  • Over dinner on R.V. Calypso while anchored on the lee side of Glover's Reef in Belize, Jacques Cousteau told Phil Dustan that he suspected humans were having a negative impact on coral reefs. Dustan—a young ocean ecologist who had worked in the lush coral reefs of the Caribbean and Sinai Peninsula—found this difficult to believe. It was December 1974.

  • The camera enables the researchers to see an aspect of light that humans are essentially blind to: polarized light. Though humans aren't sensitive to polarized light, many reef dwelling animals are but this has not always been taken into account in previous studies of reef communities.

  • Drosophila Orb2 plays an important role in the persistence of memory.
Memories in our brains are maintained by connections between neurons called "synapses". But how do these synapses stay strong and keep memories alive for decades? Neuroscientists at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research have discovered a major clue from a study in fruit flies: Hardy, self-copying clusters or oligomers of a synapse protein are an essential ingredient for the formation of long-term memory.
